The WBS Penguins headed south today to Chocolate Town to take on the Hershey Bears. It was a snowy evening here in WBS but still a great hockey night for WBS Penguin fans, as I am sure a lot made the trip down 81 for today’s game. The WBS Penguins were looking for a win tonight to better their stand against the Senators who are holding on to first place in the East Division by now one point over the Penguins.
After one period of play the WBS penguins were leading the Hershey Bears 2-1 Harry Zolnierczyk and Tom Kostopoulos would tally the Penguins goals. Zolnierczyk would score even strength in a nice feed from Uher while Kostopoulos would score a rebound goal on the power play.
By the end of the first period things in WBS weren’t looking as good as things in Hershey, roads were covered and slippery here but the Pens were ahead there.
Second period gave both sides their share of chances but neither side found the opening to give their team a goal. Eric Hartzell made some great saves.
Hershey’s Matt Watkins would take advantage of a bad decision on the Pens part and put one past Hartzell making deuces wild in Chocolate Town with just 3:59 left in the second. Nick Drazenovic would take a tripping penalty at the end of the second frame giving the Bears a power play to start the third, something at this point just after a goal you hope doesn’t prove to be fatal.
Third period starts with the carry over and WBS kills the Bears power play keeping it two all, WBS would get a chance at getting the go ahead score as Hershey would get called for too many men however the WBS power play unit just can’t get it done.
Dane Byers came in on Hartzell Samuelsson got a piece of him giving Hershey a penalty shot watching the highlights I still think that was a questionable call was he shooting when Samuelsson made contact? and was it really a hook?, Byers scores on the PS giving Hershey a one goal lead. Cameron Schilling took a delay of game penalty giving WBS their chance on the power play but WBS doesn’t covert still looking at a one goal rut to climb out of with under seven minutes to do so.
It seemed that it was going to take some kind of magic to make this even again and just as I tweeted the Penguins need to pull a rabbit out of their hats Bobby Farnham does just that smoking one past Grubauer Farnham’s third of the season and the Pens third of the night making it all even at three late in the third.
After all was said and done in regulation it was still 3-3 heading for OT WBS looking to end this but Watkins feeds Dustin Gazley who sinks the Bears winning goal just forty some seconds into overtime sending the WBS Penguins back home on a quiet bus.
