The WBS Penguins took on the Porrtland Pirates tonight at the Cumberland County Civic Center it was the Pirates who seemed to be the best prepaired for tonights game just seemed to have the Penguins number from the get go, it only takes the Pirates 3:24 to get on the boards. Andy Miele picks off a pass at the WBS blue line, skates in and scores then :30 later Boris Valabik scores for the Pirates making it 2-0 Portland creating a big hole for the Penguins to crawl out of. Things didn’t look so good for the Pens even though they had a few good chances they just couldn’t seem to find the niche.
Second period started with the Pirates looking as good as they did in the first period but manage to spiral down a little with penalties, first giving WBS a power play then giving them a 5 on 3 the first power paly does WBS no good but the 5 on 3 creates a great scoring opportunity for Brian Dumoulin netting the Penguins first goal and cutting the Pirates lead in half. Brian Gibbons gets crunched badly against the boards drawing a five minute boarding major on Max Goncherov. The Penguins don’t put the power play to good use it seemed more like the Pirates did almost a nice short handed chance, meanwhile the Penguins barely getting things set up. The second frame would end with the Pirates still in the lead 2 to 1.
The third period looked totally different for the Penguins, it was like they finally woke up, this is where tonight’s game started for WBS. Joey Mormina scored for WBS just 1:13 in, even strength and all of a sudden we have a hockey game everyone tied at two. Nine minutes and some seconds later Trevor Smith deflects a shot from Joe Morrow to make it 3-2 Pens. With just over half the period gone and the Penguins in the lead the Pirates mounted the attack, but the Pens held on it was three to two for the final score WBS taming two points out of the game.
