Double the Fun: Fergus nets two, Nailers Edge Royals

The Wheeling Nailers came into Saturday night’s tilt with Reading looking to continue their push to a playoff spot.

Mission accomplished.

Cam Fergus netted 2 goals and Scott Zurevinski had 3 points (1+2) as the Wheeling won 3-1 at Sovereign Center. The game started out with Wheeling peppering Royals’ netminder Riley Gill from the outset. Fergus got his 9th of the season and first of the game at 4:26, popping the rebound of a Zurevinski shot past an outstretched Gill. 13 minutes or so later, Fergus would strike a gain, Deking past Gill. Zurevinski and Peter Lenes had assists.

The second period produced no scoring, but plenty of chippyness. It seemed after every whistle, there was a push and a shove somewhere.

Reading turned up the pressure in period three, and it showed, as the Nailers would get only two shots in the period. However, this would prove not to be an issue thanks to the continued stellar play of goaltender Peter Delmas. He made several great stops to preserve the shutout. It was gallant effort, but it was not meant to be. At 18:42 of the final frame, Stanislav Galiev took a shot, then Joel Champagne did the same, Standing at the side of the net, David Vallorani stuffed in the rebound, breaking up the shutout.

The scoring was closed out at 19:07. With the goalie pulled, giving Zurevinski an uncontesyed Breakaway Empt ynetter.

Notes: Wheeling scratched Keven Veilleux, who was “dinged up” Last night against Trenton. Also scratched were D Joe Tolles and D Gentry Zollars. After the game, Reading coach Larry Courville said the Royals would be adding a forward, but did not say where that player would come from. “College guys are playing their tournaments, this week, so that’s always a possibility.” Former Naile Nick Niedert backed up Riley Gill for Reading.
