Tonight the WBS Penguins took on the Connecticut Whale in front of a sold out crowd at the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza. According to the numbers the Pens had 8,242 fans in attendance tonight for the Armed Forces appreciation night.
First period action tonight didn’t see much in the way of scoring, as a matter of fact it didn’t see any scoring. What it did see was a battle both teams looking for a way to get the puck on net WBS only getting 8 shots and limiting the Whale to 5. Adam Payerl would be the first to the bin tonight as he would sit for delay of game, shooting the puck over the glass, putting his team down a man for two minutes. The WBS penalty kill took the ice and made short work of the power play.
The Second period came and went almost as did the first but with a few more shots on net for both sides, still struggling to find an opening to get their teams on the board first. Connecticut would be assessed a penalty this period giving the WBS Penguins a chance to fire up their power play, but the Whale took care of business keeping it scoreless through two.
It wouldn’t be until the third period, yes kind of like last night but the Pens were not trailing at this point. Chad Kolarick would break the silence with a nice power play goal against his former team, it would be a nice backdoor pass from Trevor Smith that he would one-time inside the near post making it 1-0 Penguins
Just following the goal by Kolarick the Penguins get nailed with back-to-back penalties to give Connecticut a 5-on-3 advantage. It would be Brandon Segal getting a pass from Kris Newbury for a nice wrist shot past Jeff Zatkoff now the game was tied at one.
That’s where tonight’s regulation would end both squads taking a point out of it and heading to OT.
Looked like a normal 4×4 OT period both sides getting some action a few nice saves by both goalies but then it happened Joe Morrow found the net behind Cameron Talbotwith 53 seconds left in overtime giving the Penguins a 2-1 win over the Connecticut Whale.
Great game good win that’s 2 for 2 so far tomorrow the boys take on the Bridgeport Sound Tigers it’s a 3:00PM start so make sure you leave early if you are going or at least remember to have a radio on if you are not.
