Penguins Take Pirates In Shootout

The Portland Pirates came to town tonight to take on the WBS Penguins the Pens coming off a loss last night against the Hershey bears were looking to get one back tonight

Early on  Gibbons goes hard into the boards behind Thiessen and no call. First period for the. Penguins getting some good chances with half a period gone but still being outshot 12 to 5.

WBS would get the first power play of the game as Rundblad, sat for Portland on a trippng call. WBS would convert making it one nothing  Holzapfel would get the rebound and put it home making it 1-0 Penguins.

Pens would score again just after the first a nice feed from Bennett to Smith who tips it in for goal number two now two nothing Penguins.

Farnham would sit and brown from Portland with matching minors, WBS would score on the 4 on 4 Smith would get his second of the game making it 3 goals for the Pens and going on HTA and me without my hat tonight.

In the second period Portland would score on the power play after a little tiff behind the net, that is after Thiessen get run into by the pirates causing the skirmish

Pens go on the power play at 13:37 of the second looking to get more space between them and Portland, just as the power play gets going Ferriero gets called for interference nullifying the power play making it a 4 on 4.

Portland scores again with 7:30 left in the second making it a one point game. Tempers starting to heat up infront if the Portland net  Farnham and Klinkhammer would get matching roughs creating another 4 on 4.

Portland evens it up at three early in the third after a collision near the Portland net. Portland’s Bolduc takes a roughing penalty giving the penguins the chance they need to pull ahead. Penguins have some trouble handling the puck and do not convert.

Portland Miele would elbow  Farnham giving the WBS yet another shot at the power play with less than eight minutes left in regulation. The penguins would come up empty again.

Well here we go as the regulation comes to a grinding halt the official sees fit to call Reese for a slash creating an optimal 4 on 3 for the pirates heading into OT. And pens kill it keeping it 3 all.

OT came and went with nothing happening for either side so off to the shootout, Thiessen held his ground during the shoot out keeping the Penguins alive Ferriero and Tangradi scored for the Pens giving them the win for the night.
